One year of Spirit

At a 5:30 p.m. Mass on Sunday, Holy Spirit Catholic Community will celebrate its first anniversary. Holy Spirit calls itself “an inclusive, Vatican II Eucharistic community.” Its pastor is the Rev. Beverly Bingle, who was ordained in the Roman Catholic Womanpriest movement Feb. 9, 2013.

“All are welcome to celebrate with us,” the Rev. Bingle said in a press release. “No one is excluded from communion, regardless of marital status, gender orientation, or any other barriers set up by our Catholic hierarchy that keep people away from the sacraments.”

Holy Spirit celebrates Mass three times a week, at at 4:30 p.m. Saturdays and 9 a.m. Sundays at the Interfaith Chapel of Toledo Campus Ministry, 2086 Brookdale, and Sundays at 5:30 p.m. at Unity of Toledo, 3535 Executive Pkwy., where the anniversary Mass will take place.

Abrahamic Dialogue

“Agreeing to Disagree: The Power of Sacred Dissent” is the title of the annual Jewish-Christian-Muslim Dialogue at the University of Toledo, scheduled for Monday at 7 p.m. in the Ingman Room at the university's student union, 2965 W. Centennial Dr. Devorah Schoenfeld, a theology professor at Loyola University Chicago, will give the keynote and explain hevruta, a type of learning for text interpretation that audience members will try. After that, University of Toledo professors Ovamir Anjum, the Imam Khattab Chair of Islamic Studies, and Peter Feldmeier, the Thomas and Margaret Murray & James J. Bacik Professor of Catholic Studies, will give reflections. Admission is free, and a dessert reception will open the event. Visitros may park for free in lot 13.

Abundant talk

Abundant Life Ministries moved into the former site of Calvary Church, at 5025 Glendale Ave, on Oct. 9, 2013, three years (minus one day) after its founding by the Rev. Cordell Jenkins. Among its activities, for the next two weeks, the church is presenting “straight talk” sessions, panel discussions with women on Wednesday and with men on Feb. 19, both at 7 p.m. The conversations will cover relationships, struggles, triumphs, healing, faith, and overcoming, church materials say. For more information, call 419-382-1300 or go to almtoledo.org.

On the border

Alexis Congregational Church changed its name. Now it is State Line Community Church. “It gives us a better geographic identification with the community,” said State Line's pastor, the Rev. Garry Hulisz. And the church is “smack dab on the state line,” with a concrete marker on the property. The church is affiliated with the National Association of Congregational Christian Churches.

On Friday, the church will host a spaghetti dinner at 6 p.m. at its building, 6202 N. Detroit Ave., to celebrate the name change. A ribbon-cutting was held the first Sunday in January as a name-change celebration within the congregation.
