Awarding abilities

The 2014 Open Arms Awards will be presented today at the 16th annual Diocese of Toledo Open Door Liturgy honoring Roman Catholics who have disabilities. The Mass, hosted by Equal Access Ministries at 4:30 p.m. at St. Augustine Church, 210 E. Clinton St., Napoleon, will be celebrated by the Rev. Charles Ritter, diocesan administrator. The Open Arms Awards honor parish members who model Christian service in their church and in the community while living with a disability.

The steel guitar gets screen time for its sacred music in a movie premiere today at 4 and 6 p.m. at the Maumee Indoor Theater, 601 Conant St, Maumee. Young Guns of Sacred Steel shows off some religious fervor and the slide guitar music form which Del Grace, board president of Toledo's Sacred Strings Records, calls a rich African American musical legacy.

It's music that doesn't have the twangy steel of classic country music, but its sounds are also heard in blues and soul—the type of music that helps a congregation “dance on the devil's head,” as one guitarist said in a video on sacredstrings.com, the Web site where movie tickets can be purchased. Les bons temps roulez—at church

Park Congregational Church, 1456 Harvard Blvd., will have some musical pleasure on Sunday at 10 a.m., before Lent begins Wednesday, with Ragtime Rick and His Ecumenical Jazz Band playing during Sunday worship. A mardi gras luncheon follows at 11:15, with tickets costing $10.

 

New pastor in Concordia's pulpit

The Rev. Fredrick Hearn will be officially installed Sunday as the pastor of Concordia Lutheran Church, 3636 S. Detroit Ave., at the church at 4 p.m. Sunday. Pastor Hearn, who moved to Toledo from Phoenix with his family, succeeds the Rev. Doug Meilander after his retirement, and follows the Rev. Donald Weiss, who was the vacancy pastor. Fellowship and refreshments will follow the installation ceremony.

 

Lenten walk

Zoar Lutheran Church, 314 E. Indiana Ave., Perrysburg, is making use of wellness and art to observe the Christian season of Lent, a time of self-examination, meditation, and religious solemnity which this year is from Wednesday through April 19. “40 Days of Walking” is Zoar's Lenten theme, and members are encouraged to do daily wellness-walking (the Lenten 40-day calendar does not include Sundays) while thinking about Jesus' journey in relation to their lives.

Zoar's Liturgical Arts Committee will display a temporary installation, “Let Us Ever Walk with Jesus,” viewable whenever Zoar is open, from Ash Wednesday—this Wednesday—through Palm Sunday April 13. The art installation has pairs of shoes accompanied by stories of where those shoes have taken people on faith journeys.
