Speaking for men

It is men's day weekend at St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church, where the Rev. James Willis, Sr., is senior pastor. Today there is a breakfast at 9 a.m. at the church, 1502 N. Detroit Ave., with the Rev. K. David Johnson of Third Baptist Church. Sunday has Brandon Tucker from Greater New Psalmist Church speaking at the 10:45 a.m. service, then at 4 p.m. the Rev. Cory Pruitt of Mt. Enon Missionary Baptist Church, Dayton, speaks.

 

Bawdy Bacik?

The Rev. Jim Bacik's lecture series has a bit of a twist this month. The title is Andrew Greeley and the Catholic Imagination: Racy Novels and Irish Catholics. Andrew Greeley, who died in May 2013, was a Roman Catholic priest and a best-selling novelist. Father Bacik's lecture is Thursday, 5:30 p.m., at the Franciscan Center at Lourdes University, 6832 Convent Blvd., Sylvania. Cost is $15 at the door.

 

The themes of Purim

The holiday of Purim, celebrated primarily by the Jewish community, is on March 16. All three Toledo-area synagogues and the Chabad House have programs. Purim Under the Sea is the theme at Chabad Toledo, to be held March 16, 4 p.m., at Congregation Etz Chayim, 3858 Woodley Rd. RSVPs are requested; cost is $12 for children, $16 for adults, $60 maximum for a family.

Congregation Etz Chayim will have a lecture, “Mordechai Takes a Stand: the Megillah's Message of Social Activism,” by its rabbi, Jonathan Bienenfeld, during the Shalosh Seudas third sabbath meal March 15 at 7:30 p.m., then it has a Megillah reading, the story of Purim, at 9 p.m. On March 16 at 8 a.m. its school, Ohr Chadash, takes part in the celebration and Mrs. Sharon Lapitsky's class will present a Purimspiel.

Congregation B'nai Israel starts early, with a brunch celebrating Queen Vashti Sunday at 9:30 a.m. and a jewelry sale open to the public from noon to 1 p.m. A traditional Megillah reading is March 15 at 8:15 p.m., then on March 16 at 10 a.m. it presents Hakuna Megillah, a Disney Purimspiel, followed by a carnival at noon.

Temple Shomer Emunim's 10 a.m. to noon Purim carnival March 16 starts with a Megillah reading, and at 5 p.m. the Temple will have an Italian dinner along with “Oh What a Spiel!,” a Jersey Boys Megillah! MInistering to the incarcerated

Catholic Charities' annual jail and prison ministry workshop, for interested volunteers, will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. March 15 at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 750 Bright Rd., Findlay. The Rev. David Cirata, pastor of both St. Mary Catholic Church, Edgerton, and St. Michael Catholic Church, Hicksville, will speak. Registration is $15. Race, justice, and the Church

The Northwest Ohio Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) offers its second session of “Real Talk, Real People: A Conversation about the Body of Christ, Race, and Justice” March 15 at 10 a.m. at Lutheran Church of the Master, 28744 Simmons Rd., Perrysburg. The Rev. Sherman Hicks, the ELCA director for multicultural ministries, is lead presenter for the conversations on race, justice, and the work of the Church. Saturday's meeting is primarily for lay people, but all are welcome.
