Quarter century at Calvary

The Rev. Floyd Smith of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church will preach at Bethlehem Baptist Church March 30 at 4 p.m. as part of Bethlehem's pastoral appreciation for the Rev. Derek Arnold's 20 years there, but Pastor Smith also is appreciated by his congregation, which is marking his 25th anniversary. Bishop Duane Tisdale and the Rev. Mervin Barnes have already spoken, and on Sunday the Rev. James Willis of St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church will speak at 4 p.m. at Calvary, 702 Collingwood Blvd. Plus, today Calvary hosts a musical celebration at TK p.m. in Pastor Smith's honor, with ministers, visiting choirs, and other performers. A $50 per person banquet celebration is scheduled for April 4 at 7 p.m. at the Radisson Hotel at the University of Toledo, 3100 Glendale Ave. For more information, call Sister France Ester at 419-932-0105.

 

Images of Bethlehem and Gaza

Photographer, writer, and political activist Skip Schiel of Cambridge, Mass., brings two exhibits of his photographs to northwest Ohio today through Tuesday. “Bethlehem the Holy, the Struggle for an Ancient City” shows the Palestinian-territory city and the walls that surround it. “Eyewitness Gaza” is framed by his personal experiences and Israeli/Palestinian politics. Mr. Schiel will talk about the Bethlehem photos today at 7 p.m. at Hope Lutheran Church, 151 W. Center St., Fostoria, after a 5 p.m. church service and a 6 p.m. spud supper. He will speak about the Gaza photos Sunday at 1 p.m. at the University of Toledo Student Union room 2591; Monday at 6:30 p.m. at Birchard Pulbic Library, 423 Crogham St., Fremont; and Tuesday at the Gundlach Theater at Heidelberg University, Tiffin. Mr. Scheil will also speak at two Tiffin University classes.

 

\Baptism and church relations

Bishop Alexander Golitzin, the diocesan prelate of the Bulgarian Diocese of Toledo, Orthodox Church in America, is the speaker for the 32nd annual lecture of the Lourdes University Ecumenical Lecture Series, hosted by the university's department of theological studies. His topic is “The Question of Baptism in Ecumenical Relations.” The lecture, Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Franciscan Center, 6832 Convent Blvd., Sylvania, is free.

 

Disciple of Amma

Swami Shantamrita Chaitanya, a sanyasi disciple of the hugging spiritual leader known as Amma and the head of a Chicago ashram that Amma founded, will speak at the Hindu Temple of Toledo, 4336 King Rd., Sylvania, during a program that includes his discourse and devotional singing, from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday. A free dinner follows.

 

Ethics and Islam

The University of Toledo's Imam Khattab Chair of Islamic Studies, Ovamir Anjum, delivers an Islamic Studies lecture named for Imam Khattab Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Driscoll Auditorium, room 1019 of the Driscoll Alumni Center, 2800 W. Bancroft. “Planting Trees the Day before Doomsday: Islamic Reflections on Tomorrow's Ethics” is his title. A reception will follow.

 

Great commission and Hispanic culture

The Secretariat for Evangelization and Parish Life of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Toledo is the sponsor of the second great commission day, on embracing diverse cultures in the parish and school. Alejandro Aquilera-Titus, assistant director of the Secretariat for Cultural Diverstiy in the Church at the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, is the featured speaker and will talk about the gift of Hispanic culture. The 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. meeting on Wednesday is at the Ramada Conference Center, 3536 Secor Rd., Toledo, and costs $25, which includes breakfast and lunch.
