Apples for teachers

Nine teachers in Diocese of Toledo schools received Golden Apple awards, which included a $5,000 check for each, May 28 at the Toledo Club. The awards, begun in the Diocese of Pittsburgh in 1992 by the Jack and Rhodora Donahue Family Foundation and expanded to the Toledo area nine years ago, recognize teachers who base their ministry on the Catholic School Credo that combines education and religion in beliefs. The recipients are Jamie Gilbert of Fremont St. Joseph Central Catholic High School, Melissa Kissner of Toledo Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Rosalyn Liston of Lima Central Catholic High School, Michele Mikonowicz of Rosssford All Saints, Linda Newman of Willard St. Francis Xavier, Jan Runion of Carey Our Lady of Consolation, M. Therese Tate of Van Wert St. Mary, Kacie Traver of Toledo Christ the King, and Pamela Zychowicz of Sylvania St. Joseph.

Holy Trinity's new priest

The Rev. Eleftherios Legakis — Father Larry — begins his tenure as the priest at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral July 14, replacing the Rev. Ari Damaskos, who moved to Charleston, S.C. Father Larry has been priest at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Louisville, Ky., for the past eight years.

Music against malaria

Hope United Methodist Church, 4069 W. Sylvania Ave., presents a benefit concert featuring its praise band today from noon to 2:30 p.m. on its front lawn as part of the United Methodist Church's “Imagine No Malaria” campaign. Admission is free, but donations are requested. Food will be available.

Bacik compassion

The Rev. Jim Bacik returns to the Franciscan Center at Lourdes University Monday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. to speak on “Karen Armstrong: Developing the Virtue of Compassion.” He was at the same location, with other words on compassion, for the 2014 MultiFaith Banquet, presented by the MultiFaith Council of Northwest Ohio, April 27, which closed out the celebration weekend of greater Toledo being declared a region of compassion. Father Back's Monday lecture, sponsored by Sulvania Franciscan Village in cooperation with the university's theological studies department, focuses on a Christian approach to compassion. No traffic in Archbold

The Daughter Project, a Bowling Green organization raising awareness about human trafficking, and Ten Thousand Villages Archbold, a nonprofit fair-trade retail store, will join for an event focused on human trafficking prevention and recovery locally and worldwide. Jeff Wilbarger, director of the Daughter Project, and Jodi Crossgrove, who has served on the Mennonite Central Committee, will give presentations. Mud Hens are sisterly

Little Sisters Day is coming up Thursday at Fifth Third Field. When the Mud Hens play the Buffalo Bisons, the beneficiaries are the Little Sisters of the Poor and other residents of Sacred Heart Home in Oregon. A pregame barbecue picnic starts at 5:30 p.m., and the game is at 7. Admission is $25 for adults, $12 for children 12 and under for both the feast and the game.
