Sylvania resident and Toledo-based artist Nora Alfaham displays her artwork at the 51st annual Islamic Society of North America Convention at the Cobo Center, in Detroit, Mich.

Alfaham said she is inspired by her diverse backgrounds, which include the Islamic faith, her parents' homeland of Damascus, Syria, and her hometown of Toledo. She also finds a connection between two Toledos: the one in Ohio, and the one in Spain, which had been a part of the Islamic empire.

"I feel like being in the middle of all that," she says, "gives everyone a perspective that's not really seen or heard in the mainstream media."
