Armory Church gets no buyer at sheriff's auction

The Armory Church, located at 3319 Nebraska Ave., is being sold at auction after falling behind on its mortgage. According to court records the church was appraised at $925,000, but the organization owes more than $3 million in back mortgage payments.
Armory Church parishioners will continue to gather at the church’s foreclosed property, 3319 Nebraska Ave., after a sheriff's auction wrapped up without a buyer on Wednesday.
"We're really grateful," Senior Pastor William James said on Thursday. "We had worship service last night and we'll have it on Sunday. We plan on continuing to worship the Lord."

These services continue amid discussions between the church and its lender, Key Star Capital, which foreclosed on the property in December. Key Star Capital filed a complaint in June, 2017, contending the church was more than $3 million behind on mortgage payments.
Pastor James said the church community is "strategizing to see what we can do next."
The Armory Church, formerly known as St. James Holiness Church of God in Christ, has been at Nebraska Avenue since 1984. Its facility seats about 3,000.
The property is appraised at $925,000, court records show.
The church also leases space to a private elementary school, SunBridge Schools, that operates its fourth, fifth, and sixth grade classes out of the facility. Steve Mitchell, board chairman for SunBridge Schools, said last month he expects the charter school to continue operating there.
