Ohio pays more than $58M in veterans bonuses
11/5/2013YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — The state of Ohio has paid out more than $58.7 million to around 70,000 military veterans who have served in recent overseas conflicts.
The bonuses came thanks to a state constitutional amendment in 2009 allowing the state to borrow up to $200 million to pay bonuses to Ohio veterans who served in the Persian Gulf, Afghanistan and Iraq.
The Ohio Department of Veterans Services provided the updated numbers on Monday while urging veterans to take advantage of the payouts before the deadlines, according The (Youngstown) Vindicator.
Persian Gulf War-era veterans have until Dec. 31 to apply. Veterans who served during the most recent Iraqi conflict have until the end of 2014 to apply. There has been no deadline set yet for those who served in Afghanistan.
