COLUMBUS — The Ohio prisons agency says an inmate has committed suicide following his placement in segregation for refusing to follow rules.

The Department of Rehabilitation and Correction says James Redmond Jr. was found hanging from a sheet in his cell at Ross Correctional Institution in Chillicothe Sunday afternoon.

Prisons spokeswoman JoEllen Smith says the 41-year-old Redmond was placed in segregation after refusing orders to return to his cell earlier in the day.

Redmond was serving a 19-year sentence for rape out of Lucas County.

Redmond’s suicide was the 10th in the prison system this year, and comes as two consultants hired by the state are completing a report on prison suicides.
