MANSFIELD, Ohio — An Ohio corrections employee has been fired over the escape of an inmate serving a life sentence for rape.

The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction said today that James Miracle was fired from the Mansfield Correctional Institution, effective Friday.

A home phone listed for Miracle rang unanswered today.

Miracle’s firing document says he worked at the prison as a building construction superintendent and failed to properly supervise tools at the prison, falsified forms and forged signatures on maintenance inventories.

On July 3, inmate James David Myers used a pickax to break into a storage area and get three ladders, which he used to escape over three security fences.

Myers was arrested the next day after being recognized at a general store and was transferred to a higher-security prison.
