COLUMBUS — An Air Force veteran and airline captain from central Ohio wants to challenge U.S. Rep. Steve Stivers for his seat this fall.

Democrat Scott Wharton, of Amanda in Fairfield County, announced his bid Friday. Stivers is a two-term Republican from Upper Arlington, representing Ohio’s 15th Congressional District.

In a statement, Wharton said he’s running because representation in Washington is failing regular Ohioans. He said Stivers is part of the dysfunction.

Wharton flies for Delta. He also is a farmer who has appeared in parades around the district on a John Deere tractor.

He calls himself a “no-nonsense individual” who would advocate for tax fairness, infrastructure investment and worker re-training initiatives.

Stivers is a former state senator and a colonel in the Ohio Army National Guard, where he’s spent 28 years.
