Ohio celebrates Statehood Day in honor of 1803 founding, convening of 1st General Assembly
3/1/2014COLUMBUS — Ohio is turning 211 years old with this year’s Statehood Day celebration.
Saturday’s commemoration marks the convening of the first General Assembly in Chillicothe on March 1, 1803. Ohio was the 17th state to join the Union.
Events leading up to Ohio’s founding included the adoption of its first state constitution on Nov. 29, 1802, and Congress’ passage of the Enabling Act on Feb. 19, 1803, that recognized Ohio statehood and established the U.S. District Court for Ohio.
The state capitol was moved temporarily to Zanesville in 1810, restored to Chillicothe in 1812 and relocated to Columbus in 1816.
