Central Ohio shelter to reopen after cleaning to prevent more puppies from catching virus
3/16/2014HEATH, Ohio — Officials are ready to reopen a central Ohio animal shelter that closed after a litter of puppies contracted a contagious viral disease and died.
The Licking County Humane Society closed to the public in early March to quarantine and clean the facility in Health to rid it of any traces of parvovirus.
It says no more animals showed symptoms or tested positive for the virus since the initial outbreak.
The disease spreads through animal waste and direct contact between dogs. It can create intestinal and heart problems for the animals.
The shelter says it will reopen Monday. To celebrate the reopening on St. Patrick’s Day, it plans to offer drastically reduced adoption fees that day for dogs and cats that have been awaiting permanent homes for at least three months.
