CINCINNATI — An attorney says a southwest Ohio man is the American tourist who has been detained by North Korea for an unspecified crime.

The state Korean Central News Agency said today that Jeffrey Edward Fowle was being investigated for acts inconsistent with a tourist visit. It did not give details.

Timothy Tepe, a Cincinnati attorney representing the man’s family, confirmed Jeffrey Edward Fowle of Miamisburg is the American detained.

Tepe says Fowle’s family would issue a statement Monday but no sooner because of the sensitivity of the situation.

Tepe says Fowle was not in North Korea on a mission for his church, Urbancrest Baptist Church in Lebanon, Ohio. He says Fowle just wanted to visit.

Fowle is married with three children and works for the city of Moraine.
