ATHENS, Ohio — Campus police are investigating a report of a possible shooting on the Ohio University campus.

The university says police swept a residence hall Tuesday afternoon but found no evidence of a shooting. They are expanding their search throughout the school’s East Green, which has been evacuated.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol and Athens police are assisting in what city Police Chief Thomas Pyle calls “an alleged shooting.” He says there has been no confirmation yet of a shooting or injuries. A Highway Patrol spokesman says troopers were sent after school police requested help, but he had no other immediate information about the situation.

Police initially focused on Gamertsfelder Hall, which houses summer session students. It’s not clear where the report originated.

The campus is about 65 miles southeast of Columbus.
