WORTHINGTON, Ohio — Authorities in central Ohio say a freight train struck and killed a pedestrian in the middle of the night, and her death is being investigated as a possible suicide.

The Franklin County sheriff’s office says a female was hit by a southbound train around 1:35 a.m. Thursday in Sharon Township, in the northern suburbs of Columbus.

The sheriff’s office says the train conductor indicated the female stood in the middle of the tracks and didn’t try to get out of the way. The train’s speed was estimated at 50 mph, and the conductor wasn’t able to stop the train before it struck her.

Detectives found her car in a parking lot nearby.

The sheriff’s office said her family was being notified and her name was being withheld.
