Boy dies 2 days after Muskegon River tube accident

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. — A 16-year-old boy who was pulled unconscious from the Muskegon River after a weekend tubing accident has died.

The teen was taking part in an outing in Big Rapids with young people from the Muslim Community of Western Suburbs on Saturday afternoon.

The mosque in the Detroit suburb of Canton says on its website that Abid Malick died today. It says his funeral will be at the mosque on Thursday.

Big Rapids Public Safety Director Andrea Nerbonne says group members were tubing in the river behind Big Rapids Middle School about 4:30 p.m. Saturday when the teen fell from his tube. She says the boy was pulled from the river near the mouth of Mitchell Creek and airlifted to Grand Rapids Spectrum Health.
