Polish Solidarity movement leader visiting Cincinnati says U.S. can take global lead in Ukraine crisis
8/22/2014CINCINNATI — The leader of Poland’s Solidarity movement that successfully challenged Soviet bloc communism says the United States can take the lead in a global response to Russia’s role in Ukraine.
Former Polish president Lech Walesa says the world wants leadership in the situation. He says it’s not up to the United States to solve the world’s problems, but that Washington can provide the framework for solutions and help build a united front.
A Pentagon spokesman said Friday the U.S. government “strongly condemns” the unilateral movement of a Russian convoy into rebel-held Ukraine, which the Kiev government called a “direct invasion.”
The Nobel Peace Prize laureate commented Friday while at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati. Walesa and the late Nelson Mandela are being honored there this weekend.
