  • Maybe there’s something in the water at Springfield High School.

Three teams from the suburban school are in the top six after Week 2 of The Blade Student Stock Contest.

ADTR remains in first place for the second consecutive week, still riding J.C. Penney Co.’s recent surge.

GOLD moved up from fourth to second

Rugrats had the week’s biggest move, soaring from 137th place all the way up to sixth place. One of its four stocks, Tekmira Pharmaceuticals Corp., rose 48 percent last week.

Tekmira announced last week that the Food and Drug Administration had granted fast-track designation for an anti-Ebola medication being developed by the company. The fast-track status expedites the review of new drugs intended to serve unmet medical needs. Fast-track status can shorten the time to FDA approval, which is when companies can start making money off their products.

Ronald Belle, senior vice president and investment advisers division executive at Fifth Third Bank in Toledo, said biotech stocks are hard to predict.

“Whenever outside sources impact a product offering, company, or industry, volatility in the stock price often results. When markets cannot predict a result, concern sets in,” Mr. Belle said. “It is far easier for the market to predict sales results, earnings, etc., than to predict rulings.”

ADTR’s portfolio has grown 14.8 percent — from $40,000 to $45,939.13 — in just two weeks. The team is part of Jennifer Hoel’s financial algebra class.

GOLD has ridden the outstanding performance of two stocks, Hawaiian Holdings, the parent company of Hawaiian Airlines, and Egalet Ltd., a pharmaceutical company that went public in early February.

GOLD and Rugrats are both made up of students taught by Bonita Adams in a class on money management.

She said the students, who range from ninth grade to 12th grade, were divided into teams of four or five people. They spent time researching different companies before deciding which stocks to choose.

“I told them different things to look at, then they chose the stocks,” Ms. Adams said.

There are 158 teams from Toledo-area high schools and middle schools competing in the 12-week contest.

Each team was given a mythical $40,000 to split evenly among four stocks that were selling for at least $5 a share.

Midway through the contest, the teams will have one chance to trade in one or more of their stocks for another stock.

At the end of the contest, the team whose portfolio has grown the most will be the winner.

The winning team will get $250 for the students and $250 for the school.

The second-place team will receive $250 for the school, and third place gets $100 for the school. Prizes may be cash or gift certificates.

The contest is sponsored by The Blade’s Newspaper in Education program, the Taylor Automotive Family, Fifth Third Bank, and the University of Toledo, which calculates the results.

The S&P 500 rose more than 2 percent in the first two weeks of the contest. And only 13 of the 159 teams have lost money so far.
