University of Toledo point-shaving trial in Detroit could be delayed again; lawyers want off case
9/15/2013DETROIT — The point-shaving trial of a Detroit-area businessman and three former University of Toledo athletes could be delayed again.
Attorneys for Ghazi “Gary” Manni are asking a judge to let them withdraw from the case. Neil Fink and Kim Stout say their relationship with Manni has broken down. A Detroit federal judge will hold a hearing Tuesday.
A trial for Manni and former Toledo basketball players Anton Currie, Kashif Payne and Keith Triplett is set for Oct. 29. But if Manni gets a new attorney, that date seems doomed. They were charged more than four years ago.
Manni is accused of bribing Toledo players from 2004 to 2006 while placing bets on games. Four more former Rockets and businessman Mitchell “Ed” Karam have pleaded guilty. They have not received their sentences.
