Strong 2nd period lifts Walleye to road victory

WHEELING, W. Va. — The Toledo Walleye scored three times in the second period to help lead to a 5-3 road win at Wheeling on Saturday night to snap a two-game skid.

Daniel Koger scored twice while Alden Hirschfeld tallied a goal and two assists for Toledo (11-18-3).

Hannu Toivonen made 31 saves in net, including 15 saves in the third period.

Aaron Clarke and Louis-Marc Aubry also scored for the Walleye.

The rough-and-tumble game featured 17 penalties and 11 power plays.

The Walleye capitalized twice with the man-advantage, going for 2 for 6 on the power play while Wheeling (15-13-6) was 1 for 5.

Koger scored to stake Toledo to a 1-0 lead and his second along with Clarke’s power-play marker and Aubry’s goal built a 4-1 lead after two periods.

Wheeling scored twice to narrow the margin to a one-goal contest, but Hirschfeld capped the game with an empty-net goal with 12 seconds remaining.
