Walleye release imposing defenseman Oreskovic

The Toledo Walleye released imposing defenseman Phil today.

Oreskovic, a 6-foot-3 and 245-pound veteran, reached the NHL in 2008-09 when he played in 10 games for the Toronto Maple Leafs. He appeared in only 10 games for Toledo this season and had no points and 15 penalty minutes.

Oreskovic appeared in 68 games with the Walleye last season. He re-signed with the team in August. Oreskovic set career highs in assists (13) and in points (14) with Toledo last season.

Walleye coach Nick Vitucci said Oreskovic is returning to his hometown in North York, Ontario. He will play for the Brampton Beast of the Central Hockey League. Brampton is about 30 minutes west of North York.

“This is a great opportunity for Phil in his hockey and personal life to return to his hometown,” Vitucci said. “Both parties felt like this was the best decision at this time. We can’t thank Phil enough for all of the effort he has put forth both on and off the ice in representing the Toledo Walleye.”

Oreskovic, 26, has racked up 632 penalty minutes in 373 games as a professional. He reached the NHL in 2008-09 when he played in 10 games for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
