KALAMAZOO — Two goals from David Gilbert and a three-point night by Maxim Shalunov were not enough for the Toledo Walleye on Saturday night in a 5-4 loss at Kalamazoo on Saturday night to snap a modest two-game winning streak.

The Walleye (16-25-3) bolted out to a 2-0 lead on the strength of goals by Gilbert and Kevin Lynch but the Wings (26-16-4) rallied with one goal in the first and three straight in the second period to take a 4-2 lead in front of 2,990 spectators at Wings Stadium.

Shalunov’s power-play goal with 4:08 left in the second cut the deficit to 4-3 but Brandon Martell scored for Kalamazoo three minutes into the third to reclaim the two-goal advantage.

Kalamazoo’s Joel Martin stopped 28 shots for the win.

One of his saves was on Aaron Clarke in the second period as the Wings’ netminder stopped the Walleye forward on a penalty shot with 2:02 left in the second period.

Jared Coreau made 35 saves as the Walleye were outshot 40-32.

Both teams went 2-for-4 on the power play.
