Vitucci steps down as Walleye head coach

Nick Vitucci has stepped down as head coach of the Toledo Walleye, the team announced today. Assistant coach Dan Watson will serve as the team's interim head coach.

Vitucci, 46, coached five seasons with the Walleye and four seasons coaching the Toledo Storm. His composite coaching record is 289-262-52.

“I have enjoyed my time coaching the Walleye,” Vitucci said. “It has been extremely fulfilling to start a new team and to mentor young hockey players who have a passion for the game, but I feel that it’s time for some new leadership and a new approach. This will always be a highlight in my career.”

The Walleye are 16-31-3 and in last place with 36 points in the ECHL's Eastern Conference, and have been plagued by injuries and roster turnover through the course of this season. 

“Nick has been a valuable team builder, mentor and colleague,” Napoli said. " I am happy to say that he will remain with the Walleye organization. His future role, which is yet to be finalized, will capitalize on his nearly 25 years of professional hockey experience.”

The Walleye have lost eight straight games, and Monday traded two players, defenseman Russ Sinkewich to the Idaho Steelheads for Tyler Elbrecht and future considerations; and forward Aaron Bogosian to the Florida Everblades for future considerations.

The Walleye host Greenville at 7:15 p.m. Saturday at the Huntington Center. There are 21 games remaining in the regular season.
