Walleye clip Kalamazoo in shootout

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — The Walleye scored a late goal in regulation to send their game against Kalamazoo to overtime on Saturday night and then prevailed 2-1 in a contest that went to a shootout.

The Walleye (20-39-5) gave up a goal less than two minutes into the second period. But Toledo then tied it at 1 when forward Brett Perlini scored with 7:39 left on assists from Kyle Rogers and Travis Novak.

Toledo goalie Hanuu Toivonen, who finished with 25 saves in regulation, then stopped four of five Kalamazoo skaters in the shootout to earn the win.

Max Shalunov and Jimmy McDowell scored in the shootout for the Walleye.

Toledo earned two points and outshot Kalamazoo 39-26.

The Walleye fell behind 1-0 just 1:57 into the game. Kalamazoo goalie Joel Martin was then sharp and finished with 38 saves.

Perlini then scored on a rebound after Rogers had a good chance.

Shalunov opened the shootout by beating Martin and then McDowell, who was Toledo’s second skater, scored. Toivonen stopped the Wings’ final four shooters.

The teams meet again today.

The Walleye host the Wings at 5:15 at the Huntington Center.
