Walleye fall in shootout

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Toledo rookie Max Shalunov scored back-to-back unanswered goals in the third period tonight but the Walleye lost 4-3 to Fort Wayne in a game that went to the shootout.

Walleye goalie Jared Coreau made a season-high 50 saves in regulation and overtime. He then stopped five skaters in the shootout but the Komets scored twice to take the win. Toledo's Matt Abercrombie was the only one of seven Walleye skaters to score in the shootout.

Shalunov scored four minutes into the the third period to pull Toledo within a goal and then scored with just 17 seconds left to send it to overtime. Shalunov tallied his team-high 17th and 18th goals of the season.

The Komets outshot the Walleye 53-32 as Toledo lost its sixth game in a row.

The Walleye took a 1-0 lead when Brett Perlini scored late in the first period on assists from Matt Abercrombie and C.J. Chartrain.

But the Komets scored single goals in the first, second, and third periods against Coreau (1-12-6).

Toledo (21-43-7) hosts Cincinnati in the season finale on Sunday.
