UNITED NATIONS — U.S. and Russian officials will meet with the U.N.-Arab League in Geneva on Nov. 5 as part of stepped up international efforts to hold a peace conference on Syria in mid-November.

U.N. spokesman Martin Nesirky said today that joint envoy Lakhdar Brahimi and the U.S. and Russian officials will meet later the same day with the three other permanent members of the U.N. Security Council — Britain, France and China.

The United States, which supports Syria’s opposition, and Russia, which supports President Bashar Assad’s government, have been trying to convene a new Geneva conference with the U.N. and Brahimi’s assistance.

Nesirky has repeatedly said that Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will set the date of the conference.
