VERACRUZ, Mexico — A passenger bus collided with a broken-down truck and burst into flames, killing at least 34 people today in southern Mexico, the national government reported.

The federal highway department said the crash occurred shortly after midnight in the southeastern state of Veracruz. It said 34 died and four others escaped with injuries

The emergency director for Veracruz’s Civil Defense agency, Ricardo Maza Limon, said the victims apparently burned to death inside the bus, which was en route from the Tabasco state capital of Veracruz to Mexico City.

The vehicle itself was so badly charred that the tires melted and the markings on its sides were unreadable.

Officials were working to determine the identities of those who died.
