Interactive exhibit opens in West Toledo

    The works of Randy Bennett, an oil painter and mixed media artist from Rudolph, Ohio, will be on display at the Art and Performance Center in West Toledo.

    • A show featuring the thought-provoking work of an area artist opens next week at the Art and Performance Center of West Toledo, and will remain on display through the month of March.

    Randy Bennett’s pieces will be the inspiration for other art during a workshop from 6 to 8 p.m. March 3, when artists are invited to develop their writings and music in response to Bennett’s work. Performances from that work will be produced at a closing reception at 7 p.m. March 31 attended by Bennett.

    The center, which opened in March, 2017, at 2702 W. Sylvania Ave., Sylvania, offers a variety of creative experiences, including monthly art shows and Art Market Dayz the second Saturday of every month. The center also hosts youth and adult art classes.

    ■ A painting that responds to the civil rights movement and was prominent during an exhibition at the Detroit Institute of Arts has become a permanent feature.

    Queen Mother Helen Moore, 2015, oil on copper, is a painting by Mario Moore, who in the piece portrays his grandmother holding framed photographs of her three black sons. It was installed as part of Art of Rebellion: Black Art of the Civil Rights Movement, that was shown July through October.

    “Constantly, what you see is the mourning mother, a black mother holding images of her recently killed or murdered black sons,” Moore told The Blade in a previous interview. “What I wanted to show was what I see in my family — a portrayal of power and protection.”

    Moore’s grandmother, Helen Moore, is a civil rights activist in the Detroit area. Moore lives and creates art in Brooklyn. Upon its acquisition, Queen Mother Helen Moore was installed in a section of the DIA’s African-American art galleries.

    ■ Lourdes University’s art department has mixed the work of a photographer and glass artist at one exhibition that opened Tuesday and runs through March 21.

    Pieces created by artists William Horvath and Gail Mirrow will be on display in the Canticle Center Gallery, 5335 Silica Dr., Sylvania, on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

    ■ The Toledo Artists’ Club has set a date of April 21 for its annual auction event.

    This is the 57th year for the auction, which features original work by club members, and is held at the Maumee Elks Lodge, 139 W. Wayne St. A preview of items starts at 6 p.m.; the auction starts at 7.

    ■ Firenation Glass Studio and Gallery in Holland is hosting a spring open house from 6-10 p.m. March 2.

    The event will include a sand casting demonstration by Detroit artist Albert Young and assistant Ian Zapico, starting about 7 p.m.

    ■ A senior curator at the Toledo Museum of Art will preview a Seven Deadly Sins concert performance by the Toledo Symphony at the Peristyle with a presentation of the seven deadly sins in visual art.

    Larry Nichols, senior curator of European and American painting and sculpture before 1900, will give the free talk at 6 p.m. Friday in the Green Room at the museum. It will include work from Hieronymus Bosch and W.D. “Crazy Mac” McCaffrey.

    The talk will preview a symphony concert performance that features chanteuse Storm Large performing Kurt Weill’s Seven Deadly Sins along with other works by Johann Strauss, Camille Saint-Saëns, and other composers.

    Guests can attend the concert in the Peristyle next door at 8 p.m. A second concert is at 8 p.m. Saturday.
