Toledo artist Larry Golba has 23 watercolors and two oil paintings on display until Feb. 17 at the Perrysburg Municipal Building.

He prides himself in his "plein air" paintings, which is being outside to paint a visible scene. He likes painting some scenes in Lakeside, Ohio, where he can paint a cottage or the shoreline. The Maumee River is the subject in many of his paintings, too.

"I remember my paintings on location far more than others because of the sights, sounds, and weather," he said. "The conditions, sunlight, and colors at that moment will never be experienced again."

The challenge for Mr. Golba as he paints outdoors are the conditions constantly changing. He said he  has to have a good memory.

"I tell my students if you see a situation or scene where you like the light and patterns, work on establishing the shadows right away and try not to change the painting as the lighting changes," Mr. Golba said.

He taught art at Bedford Public Schools for 30 years, retiring in 2001. He private lessons for awhile after. The Maumee River, Side Cut Park, and Wildwood Park are some of his favorite area places to capture moments with watercolors. He would like to possibly move his work to the streets of Toledo soon.

The Perrysburg Municipal Building is at 201 West Indiana Ave. The art was curated by Main Art-ery in Perrysburg.

While he has a long list of awards -- including the Artist of the Year from the Toledo Artists Club and several northwest Ohio first place event awards -- he said awards and ribbons don't matter as much as what he's currently doing.

"It's a nice venue and I hope people go see it," Mr. Golba said about the Perrysburg Municipal Building. "It is nice anytime someone appreciates your work."
