  • Today’s Thrifty Thursday feature offers treats from two different traditions. So whether you want a classic European-style dessert or beautiful Middle Eastern delicacies, So Sweet Lebanese and French Pastries is the place to go.

With Lebanon having been a French colony until 1943, the latter country’s culinary influence is still a presence. So Sweet celebrates both cuisines with gorgeous baked goods that are made in-house.

Baklawa (similar to the more-familiar baklava, but with a slightly different flavoring), birds’ nests, wardat (pistachio-filled phyllo cups), and ismalia (layers of shredded wheat sandwiched with a creamy center) are just a few of the crisp, flaky, delicious delicacies showcased at the bakery. And for a mere $5, you can buy a take-out container filled with an assortment of these goodies.

If you eat in, surrounded by mock-ups of creative cakes, you can enjoy any of the Lebanese offerings or a beautiful French-style pastry, such as a deliciously decadent chocolate cheesecake. Coffee and tea are complimentary for guests who choose to sit in the bright, friendly shop to slowly savor their treats.

Slices of many cakes and tortes are available for $4 to $5, as well. And don’t forget to try some of the beautiful, delicate macarons that come in a rainbow of colors and flavors.

But there are also savory options. For a mere $1.50, you can select manoushe: flatbreads that are served with a variety of toppings. Roasted vegetables, spinach and cheese, and the fragrant spice blend za’atar are just three of the temptations. That leaves plenty of room within our budget to reward yourself with a little something sweet.

So be sure to stop by So Sweet and linger over one — or more — of the wonderful options.
