Tree City Film Festival returns to Sylvania

  • The Tree City Film Festival brings a lineup of Oscar-nominated and locally produced films to Sylvania on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. This year marks the sixth annual festival, which is presented by the Sylvania Community Arts Commission.

    Attendees can catch 2017 Oscar-nominated short films on Friday and Saturday at the Nederhouser Community Hall in Olander Park, 6930 W. Sylvania Ave., Sylvania. Live-action films are slated for 7 p.m. Friday, animated for 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

    The festival continues with films produced for the Tree City Film Festival’s 50-hour Challenge at 7 p.m. Saturday at the community hall, and with student-produced “Shorties” at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the Sylvania Northview High School Performing Arts Center, 5403 Silica Drive, Sylvania.

    Howard Marsh Metropark, in Jerusalem Township, welcomes visitors for a grand opening on Saturday. Located at 611 S. Howard Rd., Curtice, Ohio, adjacent to the Metzger Marsh Wildlife Area, Howard Marsh is the latest and second largest park to join the Metroparks Toledo system.

    During its grand opening, visitors are invited to tour the park and meet representatives of Metroparks Toledo, the Ohio Division of Wildlife, and other partner agencies from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. As with all parks in the system, it will then be open 7 a.m. until dark every day with no admission fee.

    ■ The Wood County Plant Exchange welcomes gardeners beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Wood County Fairgrounds Home and Garden Building, 13800 Poe Rd., Bowling Green. Each attendee receives three plants, subject to availability, as well an additional plant for each plant that he or she brings to exchange. Master gardeners will be on hand to answer questions.

    The plant exchange is organized by the Ohio State University Extension Master Gardener Volunteers in Wood County. Attendees can begin dropping off plants at the site at 9 a.m. For more information, go to bit.ly/2vGV24k.

    World Tai Chi Day is Saturday. Harmony in Motion Tai Chi, Temple of the Dragon Martial Arts, and other area tai chi schools are celebrating locally with a free demonstration event.

    The event runs 10 a.m. to noon at Common Space Arts Council, 1700 N. Reynolds Rd. Attendees can learn about tai chi, interact with instructors, and even participate in qigong and tai chi. For more information, call 419-266-0773.
