Library seeks bands for Garage Rock II

The Toledo-Lucas County Library is again hosting the sounds of Garage Rock II, a six-week series featuring 18 area bands performing for free in the parking garage of the Main Library, 325 Michigan Ave. during the summer. Bands may drop off a sample of their work at any of the 19 library locations by April 30. Winners will be announced May 13. Concerts are slated to begin on Thursday, June 9, at 6:30 p.m. and continue on a weekly basis through July 14. Information, 419-259-5381

The Magic School Bus - Live on Stage will be presented at 4 and 7 p.m. Friday at the Stranahan Theater, 4645 Heatherdowns Blvd. Tickets, $17, $20, and $23 are available from the box office, 419-381-8851 and Ticketmaster, 419-474-1333.

The University of Toledo department of theatre and film presents the 2004-05 season, A Celebration of Shakespeare, with the production of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) Friday through April 24 at the Center Theatre for the Performing Art. Written by Adam Long, Daniel Singer and Jess Winfield, the play is directed by Kirby Wahl. Curtain time is 7:30 p.m. evenings, except April 18 and 19 (no performances) and 2 p.m. Sundays. The Oregon Community Theater is performing I Love You, You re Perfect, Now Change this weekend and next at Fassett Middle School auditorium, 3025 Starr Ave., Oregon. Performances are at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 3 p.m. Sundays. Tickets are $9 for adults, and $8 for seniors (60 plus) and students (18 and under) from 419-691-1398 and at the door.

The John Gibson III Memorial Bluegrass Gospel Concert takes place at 7 p.m. Saturday in Bellevue Junior High School, located at the corner of 269 North and North Street in Bellevue. Performers include the Lewis Family, Mike Stevens, and the Marksmen. Advanced tickets are $12 from 419-483-7026 or $14 at the door.

Brooklyn s The Navigators with Delta 88 will be in concert Friday at Mickey Finn s Pub, 602 Lagrange St. The Navigators manages to be both metro and retro, while Delta 88 combines classic folk and country. The show begins at 9 p.m.; tickets are $8. The Glass City Colonels and Legbone & the Indigents take the stage at 10 p.m. Saturday; cover is $5. And on Sunday, the pub and the Kidney Foundation are hosting a benefit for David Holman with music by the Glass City Colonels, Sangsara, Glass Bead Game and Desolation beginning about 8:30 p.m.; cover is $5. Kenny Wayne Shepherd will be in concert Friday at Club Bijou, on South Superior St. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. for the all ages show. Tickets, $23 can be purchased at the SeaGate Box Office, Ticketmaster outlets, and Allied Records.

Electric blues performer Anthony Gomes will be in concert at 9 p.m. Friday at the Clarion Westgate Hotel, 3536 Secor Rd. Advanced tickets are $15 from the hotel, 419-535-7070 or $18.50 at the door.

UT Earthfest and North Coast Theatre will stage the premiere of Frankenfish, a new music/theater piece about the Asian Snakehead fish that walks on land at 5 p.m. Monday outside UT s Centennial Mall. The play, which celebrates Earthfest, is the third in a trilogy about invasive species written by David Jex and Christine Child. In the event of rain the free piece will be performed in the Ingman Room of the Student Union.

The First Congregational Church, 2315 Collingwood Blvd., will show Charlie Chaplin s film The Gold Rush, accompanied by Tom Trenney on the church s Skinner organ at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Donations are $10 for adults, and $5 for children 12 and under from 419-276-8419.

Oberlin College s 2004-05 Convocation Series will conclude Thursday with an onstage interview between Angels in America playwright Tony Kushner and Oberlin Provost Clayton Koppes, followed by a question and answer session and a book signing. The free public event takes place at 8 p.m. in Finney Chapel. Kushner has earned a Pulitzer Prize, two Tony Awards and the LAMBDA Literary Award for Drama, and one of his most recent projects include Munich, an original film being directed by Steven Spielberg. The Toledo Repertoire Theatre will hold final auditions for Rep-A-Looza # 2 from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Rep s Tenth Street stage. The competition is open to grade, middle and high school students who can sing, dance, and act. Cost is $10. Information, 419-243-9277.

The Historical Society of Grand Rapids will be holding auditions for Music Man from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the theatre on the second floor of the Town Hall Building in Grand Rapids.
