Rihanna donates $1.75M to a hospital in Barbados

Rihanna, shown performing in Breisgau, Germany, on Dec. 8, has honored her grandmother with a donation that will buy medical equipment in Barbados.

Pop star Rihanna has given $1.75 million to a hospital in her Caribbean homeland of Barbados in memory of her late grandmother.

Rihanna says the donation to buy three pieces of medical equipment was her way “giving back to Barbados.”

She made the comments during a Saturday ceremony with relatives at the island’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital. The hospital’s radiotherapy unit has been renamed the Clara Braithwaite Center for Oncology and Nuclear Medicine after Rihanna’s grandmother, who died in June.

Rihanna recently released “Unapologetic,” her seventh album in seven years.

Separating

Bethenny Frankel and husband Jason Hoppy are separating.

The 42-year-old TV personality, chef, author, and entrepreneur said Sunday that the split brings her “great sadness.”

“This was an extremely difficult decision that as a woman and a mother, I have to accept as the best choice for our family,” Frankel said. “We have love and respect for one another and will continue to amicably co-parent our daughter who is and will always remain our first priority. This is an immensely painful and heartbreaking time for us.”

Frankel and Hoppy were married in 2010 and have a daughter, Bryn, who was born that same year. The couple’s courtship and marriage were documented in two reality series, Bethenny Getting Married? and Bethenny Ever After... Frankel gained fame as a star of The Real Housewives of New York City. Since her stint on the Bravo show, she has written four books, released a fitness video, and founded her Skinnygirl line of cocktails, shapewear, and nutritional supplements.

She launched a talk show, Bethenny, over the summer that is set to air nationally on Fox stations in 2013.

The Kennedy Center Honors are meant to venerate, to showcase careers that are at once long and distinguished. But one of the interesting things about the latest honors telecast is to see how some of the honorees are not only still vigorous, but competitive.

Pay heed to the expression on bluesman Buddy Guy’s face as others play his music; it seems as if he’s thinking, “I can outplay anyone onstage.” Even as Robert Plant’s bandmates appear to enjoy the Led Zeppelin tribute, Plant himself looks coolly analytical, probably assessing how his best chops stand up next to those of his acolytes.

Guy and Led Zeppelin are showcased in the 35th Annual Kennedy Center Honors, airing at 9 p.m. Wednesday on CBS, along with David Letterman, Natalia Makarova, and Dustin Hoffman. Edited (and in some cases reorganized) from a live ceremony on Dec. 2 in Washington, the program adopts a basic rhythm for each performer: introduction by a celebrity friend, a videotaped overview, then some kind of tribute presentation or performance.

It starts slowly, with a surprisingly stuffy tribute to Hoffman. The second segment, with Makarova, includes some lovely dancing but seems dutiful, sort of like enduring the acts you don’t care about on the old Ed Sullivan Show while waiting for the Beatles to play.

But the Guy tribute is fairly solid, with Morgan Freeman introducing and music from Tracy Chapman, Bonnie Raitt, Jeff Beck, Gary Clark, Jr., Kim Wilson, and others. Things really roll with Letterman, as Tina Fey offers the introduction followed by funny remarks by Jimmy Kimmel and Ray Romano, as well as a few stilted words from Alec Baldwin. Romano is especially good, with an excellent "Stairway to Heaven" joke.

The Sun and the Daily Mirror carried photographs of the 65-year-old rocker with a pale boutonniere and a dark blue suit, and his 34-year-old bride in a traditional white gown and a clutch of matching white flowers.

The Sun quoted Wood as saying “I'm feeling great” as he and his bride kissed and posed for pictures outside the exclusive hotel in London’s upscale Mayfair district.

The newspapers said the guests included singer Rod Stewart and his wife Penny Lancaster as well as ex-Beatle Paul McCartney and his wife Nancy Shevell.

A call and an email to Wood's U.S.-based agent weren't immediately returned Saturday.
