Indigo Girls join Toledo Symphony

  • The Grammy Award-winning Indigo Girls, Amy Ray and Emily Saliers, join the Toledo Symphony on Friday for a Spotlight Event to perform some of the duo’s greatest hits, including “Close to Fine,” “Power of Two,” and “Galileo.” Resident conductor Sara Jobin will conduct this final performance of her tenure.

    The duo began their careers in the alternative-folk rock music scene at the end of the 1980s and have continually been a active force both musically and in the human rights milieu. They are the only duo with top 40 titles on the Billboard 200 in each of the last three decades.

    ■ It’s Friday presents Sonia and Omaldo Perez in a Villains, Vamps, and Vixens: The Sassy Women of Song!, a musical portrayal of characters and personalities of tougher-than-nails femme fatales in American popular culture.     ■ Masterworks Chorale concludes its 46th season with Opposites Attract, a concert exploring the ups and downs of love. Dancers from the Ballet Theatre of Toledo will assist.     ■ A Toledo summer tradition, the free Brown Bag Summer Concert Series begins this week with the Jeff Williams Group performing blues from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. Wednesday on the north lawn of the Main Library of the Toledo Lucas County Public Library, 325 N. Michigan St.

    ■ The free Wednesday at Woodland June Concert Series begins this week with the acoustic duo Barile & May at noon Wednesday at the shelter area of Woodland Park, 429 East Boundary St., Perrysburg. Concert-goers are encouraged to bring their lunch, enjoy the beauty of the park, while listening to music on one of the many picnic tables in the area.     ■ The free Music at the Market Concert Series in conjunction with the Perrysburg Farmers Market begins next week with the Academy Brass Quintet performing a wide variety of crowd-pleasing favorites beginning 7 p.m. June 7 on the Commodore Schoolyard, 140 E. Indiana Ave., Perrysburg. Concert-goers are encouraged to bring a chair or blanket.

    ■ The Lunar Octet performs eclectic jazz at 8 p.m. Sunday; tickets are $5-$30. Bassoonist Sara Schoenbeck and pianist Wayne Horvitz present a recital of new music at 8 p.m. Wednesday; tickets are $20.     ■ Owens Community College hosts an inaugural High School Honors Choir Day. The non-audition, all-day event invites all Greater Toledo area high school singers to spend a day with other students learning music. The day will culminate with a concert. Brad Pierson from the University of Toledo will conduct. Lunch, dinner, and musical experiences are included in the free event, which begins with registration at 8 a.m. and concludes with the final concert at 7:30 p.m. June 12 at the MainStage Theatre, Center for Fine and Performing Arts, Owens Community College, 30335 Oregon Rd., Perrysburg.     ■ BravoBravo!, the annual black tie gala to assist the Michigan Opera Theatre returns this week. This year’s theme is storytelling and will feature the Detroit Opera House decorated with props and sets from the theater’s productions bringing some of opera’s greatest stories to life. More than 10 of Detroit’s favorite acts will perform on three floors of music and dancing with refreshments provided by restaurants from across the city. The event runs 8 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. at the Detroit Opera House, 1526 Broadway St., Detroit.     ■ The Concert Series in Walbridge Park returns with free outdoor concerts from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursdays in June and July beginning June 7 in the park’s bandstand, 2761 Broadway. Picnic tables are available; concert-goers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. Slated for June are: Extra Stout (June 7, Irish music), the Bradberries (June 14, classic rock), Barile & May (June 21, folk rock), and E.Z. Pickenz (June 28, acoustic folk rock).

    ■ Sights and Sounds on Thursday Nights resumes its weekly takeover of the downtown area of Chelsea, Mich. Located 14 miles west of Ann Arbor, the event is in its 14th year of the free festivities, which includes multiple music venues, children’s activities, and food vendors from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays from June 7 to Aug. 16.
