47 area groups to benefit from state grants

Acoustic duo Tammy and Dan will play a mix of cover tunes Thursday during the Music at the Market Concert Series in Perrysburg.

The Ohio Arts Council Board recently approved more than $12.6 million in arts grants to 47 organizations across the state of Ohio. The awards support a variety of projects and programs for artists, organizations, students, educators, and public arts programming.

“Thanks to the Ohio governor and the legislature’s prioritization of arts funding in the state budget, the Ohio Arts Council continues to invest in Ohio’s creative economy,” said Donna S. Collins, executive director. “With these awards, Ohio’s arts sector will engage our citizens, undertake innovative projects, and lead our state to a bright, shared future.”

Funding is allotted in five categories: operating support, support short-term and innovative and experimental projects, arts-learning supporting education, arts programs supporting arts apprenticeships, and Ohio Artists on Tour.

The following individuals and organizations received funding in northwest Ohio:

• Defiance Community Cultural Council: $1,452 to support artist costs for a music performance series

• Department of Parks and Recreation for the Village of Archbold: $1,807 to support a bluegrass education program for elementary students

• Napoleon Community Band: $943 operations support for program arts activities

• Toledo Opera Association: $6,497 to sponsor the “An Opera is a Story” education program

• Collingwood Arts Center: $10,478 to support the Fringe Visual and Performing Arts Festival

• Sylvania Arts Commission: $2,448 to support youth in the performing and media arts programs

• Toledo Jazz Festival: $2,381 to support the debut of a jazz festival at the Valentine Theatre

• Toledo Orchestra Association: 119,370 in operating support

• Toledo Opera Association: $29,065 in operating support

• Toledo Ballet Association $25,118 in operating support

• Ballet Theatre of Toledo: $12,725 in operating support

• Toledo Jazz orchestra: $7,562 in operating support

• Masterworks Chorale: $3,582 in operating support

• Elaina Hernandez: $3,789 for a cultural dance apprenticeship with Vanessa Hernandez

■ It’s Friday Music Outdoor Summer Series presents The Go Rounds performing psychedelic Americana pop 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Friday on the grounds of the Toledo Museum of Art, 2445 Monroe St.

■ The Fanny & Felix Festival exploring the music of the Mendelssohn siblings runs from noon to 11 p.m. on Saturday at the Toledo Museum of Art, 2445 Monroe St. A complete listing of events can be found at 419-245-8000 or toledomuseum.org.

■ The free Music at the Market Concert Series in conjunction with the Perrysburg Farmers Market features the acoustic duo Tammy and Dan (Tammy Espinoza and Dan Searles) performing a mix of cover tunes 7 p.m. on Thursday on the Commodore Schoolyard lawn, 140 E. Indiana Ave., Perrysburg. Concert-goers are encouraged to bring a chair or blanket. Next week’s performance will be by 56 Daze.

■ The high-energy party band, Not Fast Enuff, performs 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday on the free Concert Series at the Ottawa Park Amiptheatre, 2205 Kenwood Blvd. For more information visit ottawapark.org.

■ String bassist and Michigan jazzer Paul Keller hosts three concerts showcasing new up and coming jazz pianists: John Proulx (8 p.m. Friday), Terry Lower (8 p.m. Sept. 28), and Phil DeGreg (8 p.m. Oct. 26) at the Kerrytown Concert House, 415 N. ■ The R4 (River Raisin Ragtime Review) welcomes bass-baritone opera singer Daniel Washington in a special concert celebrating the release of their newest album of spirituals, ragtime, African-American popular song, and early blues and jazz tunes. ■ Sights and Sounds on Thursday Nights continues Thursday across downtown Chelsea, Mich. Slated performers are: Grace Elizabether Lee (indie/pop), Athens Creek (rock), Mo’Easy (rock), Cate Haberi & Delbert Walling (R&B), Metro Soul Band (soul), The BluesMatics (blues), and Naked Ace (rock & soul revue). ■ The Toledo Symphony has announced a special event for the 2018-19 season, “Star Wars: A New Hope In Concert.” The symphony will provide live accompaniment to the film with John Williams’ score. ■ The Van Wert Area Performing Arts Foundation holds an informational event to kick off their building campaign for the new addition to the Niswonger Performing Arts Center. The event includes a 3-D virtual walk through of the new facility, an explanation of the need and motivation for the annex, and how the public can be involved.

All funds for the project will be raised by the Van Wert Performing Arts Foundation. The state of Ohio has awarded a $200,00 facility grant, and the VWPAF has raised an additional $170,000 to date. A total of $980,000 is needed.

The kickoff event begins at 6:30 p.m. Monday at Saltzgaber Music Hall of the Performing Arts Center, 10700 State Rt. 118, Van Wert. RSVP is requested at 419-238-6722 by Thursday.
