Blade photographers pick their best of the year

  • Every day, editors decide which photos appear in the newspaper, which images best capture the thrust of a story or, standing alone, convey a heightened mood and context.

    Today, we threw out the rule book and asked Blade staff photographers to choose one or two of their favorite photographs from 2017.

    Did they focus on drama and tragedy? The struggle for existence? Hardly. Most chose to zoom in on the small details of life, with an emphasis on inspiration and joy. Be it a mother swallow feeding her brood, cancer survivors brandishing lights against the night, or the exuberance of a woman discovering that her dog had survived an apartment fire, most reflected our capacity for hope.
