SANDUSKY — The state of Ohio is suing a Chicago company that allegedly made false promises about its ability to help save homeowners from foreclosure.

Attorney General Mike DeWine’s office filed the lawsuit against Credence Law Group Inc. in Erie County Common Pleas Court on Wednesday.

The attorney general’s office said it had received complaints from five Ohio consumers who said they paid the business $900 to $3,000 or more for loan modifications they never received. They say Credence Law Group never refunded their money.

The lawsuit is part of a joint federal-state sweep by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the Federal Trade Commission, and 15 states targeting scam operations that prey on delinquent homeowners or those facing foreclosure.
