Cable on Skyhawk ride’s carriages snaps

SANDUSKY — A Cedar Point amusement park ride that swings riders as high as 125 feet has been closed indefinitely after a cable snapped, injuring two visitors.

Cedar Point spokesman Bryan Edwards said a cable on one of the Skyhawk ride’s carriages disconnected late Saturday. One rider was treated at a hospital and released. The other person was treated at the scene, the park said.

Mr. Edwards said that as of 12:30 p.m. Sunday, the injured guest who was taken to a Sandusky hospital had been treated and released from the hospital.

The park indicates that a cable disconnected from the Skyhawk ride at about 10 p.m. Saturday.

It wasn’t clear whether the injured people were riding Skyhawk or were on the ground when hurt. Skyhawk has two giant arms that swing riders up to 125 feet at speeds of up to 60 mph.

Mr. Edwards said the Skyhawk would remain closed until an investigation into the cause of the malfunction was completed.

He said the Skyhawk was closed for a period of time in 2013, but that closure was unrelated to Saturday night’s malfunction.

Mr. Edwards said no further information regarding the malfunction or the injured guests was available Sunday night.
