Hancock County truck crash cuts power for students

FINDLAY - It was an old-fashioned school day yesterday for Liberty-Benton students who had classes without computers, lights, or anything else powered by electricity.

Just before 9 a.m., a tractor- trailer attempting to turn from Hancock County Road 88 onto State Rt. 12 went off the right side of the road, taking out a stop sign and a utility pole, according to troopers at the Findlay post of the Ohio Highway Patrol.

The semi driver, Walter Kinney, 63, of Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., was cited for failure to control.

Erma Metzger, secretary at Liberty-Benton High School, said the day went pretty smoothly although pizzas had to be brought in for students eating during the later lunch periods.

Shelly DiMattio, spokesman for American Electric Power Ohio, said about 600 Findlay area customers lost their power about 10 a.m., but it was restored to all but 180 customers within an hour.
