Temperatures fell to -14 at 5:18 a.m. at Toledo Express Airport, setting a new record for Feb. 12, according to the National Weather Service.

Today's early-morning temperatures broke the record of -10 for today's date, which was set in 1899 and tied in 1917.

And temperatures could fall further yet this morning, the weather service said.

The National Weather Service issued a special statement for the region, warning that temperatures will be very cold early this morning, ranging from near 0 to -15.

Winds will be calm in most areas and patchy freezing fog is developing, the weather service said about 4:30 a.m., warning that if freezing fog becomes dense, it could cause slick spots.

The statement urged dressing warmly and limiting exposure to the cold.
