  • Toledo takes care of business

Last week is one to forget, as the University of Toledo basketball team turned in two of its poorest performances in a season that’s more or less taken on the moniker of NCAA tournament or bust. This week, a possible 180, could be a memory book stuffer. But before the Rockets could give attention to a 74-year school record, a division title, or prime seeding at the league tournament, they first had to dispatch the Mid-American Conference’s worst team. They did that in an 85-74 home win over Ball State.

    Shooting woes sink Toledo

Tricia Cullop had a clear plan for her team’s final possession. “A make,” University of Toledo’s coach said. Andola Dortch, her point guard, cosigned. “Score,” the senior said. Simple requests, but on this day, unrealistic. The Rockets clanked one shot attempt after the next on Sunday. Their 47th and final miss ensured a 60-59 home defeat to Western Michigan.

Stauskas scores 25 as Michigan tops Michigan State

Held to four points in the first half, Nik Stauskas was concerned about was his inability to break out of a bind. Because of that, the sophomore guard made a conscious decision at halftime of the Michigan men’s basketball team’s 79-70 win over Michigan State. “In the first half, I only took three shots,” Stauskas said. “Every game, it seems like I’m being contained. I kind of came out and I was like, I’m done with this, I’m not going to be contained anymore.”

    Tough losses continue for Falcons

The Bowling Green State University men’s basketball team suffered a 55-52 loss at Miami on Sunday, the team’s fifth setback in the last six games. The Falcons’ last four losses are by a combined eight points. Spencer Parker scored 18 points but was the only player to finish in double figures for BG (11-16, 5-9 Mid-American Conference).
