VLT-zoo-classics-3

April is usually a busy time for zoo nurseries. The Toledo Zoo earlier this month welcomed a newborn female Masai giraffe named Kipenzi, though she is still off exhibit with her mother. This Blade archive photo captured some of the newest arrivals at the Toledo Zoo on April 29, 1957. Diane Jean Blech from Kendallville, Ind., is shown cuddling one of five baby foxes. Though she may have wanted to take one of them home, it wasn’t part of her father Edwin Blech’s plan for the day. They are not ideal pets, but the red fox is adaptable, intelligent and cunning. They can do well in locations close to humans, such as farms or suburban areas. When living near humans, they dine on garbage and pet food.
