snowstorm-jpg-1

Winter weather has moved in with gusto, making it feel more like the holiday season. But for those who spend most of their workday outside, the blustery winds and snow may not receive such a warm welcome. Toledo Blade photographer Bob Jacobs took this shot on February 29, 1956, and it makes you feel cold with just a glance. Steve Kertesz of Toledo is astride the girder and Lloyd Caldwell of Curtice is manning the torch. Both were steel workers with the A. B. Bentley Construction Company and were working on top of the National Bank Building enlarging the superstructure for the elevator shaft. They appeared unaffected by the cold, though temperatures that day in Toledo were in the mid-30s with a trace of snow.

David Carrasquillo assembling a 16 inch bicycle. Inmates at the Toledo Correctional Institution (TCI) assemble 117 bicycles for Lucas County Children's Services in Toledo, Ohio on December 7, 2016. The bikes were donated by The Bike Lady, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, all-volunteer charitable organization based in Columbus, Ohio that provides new bikes, helmets and locks for children. The inmates applied to TCI to be allowed to participate, and 10 were selected, based upon their behavior, cooperativeness, etc. during the year; one person was sick, so nine men had 117 bikes, ranging in size from 16" to 26" to construct. Fulton, Sandusky, and Wood Counties also will be receiving some of the bikes. Teamsters Local 20 helped to pay the freight from Huffy in California to Toledo.
