There was a time when clowns were just plain cute, and bobbing for apples didn’t have to mean getting all wet. The time was Halloween, 1978. Eric Klute, 3, at right, beams an adorable grin beneath all of those freckles, and was probably rewarded with a lot of candy on his night of trick-or-treating. Toledo police reported few problems that night, other than the usual soaping of windows and smashing of pumpkins. Not one report of a creepy clown.
