  • A Toledo police officer was assaulted Thursday afternoon while trying to arrest a disorderly man at the City Grill in downtown, police said.

Officer Pam Kujawa, who was punched on the head and blacked out briefly, was taken by ambulance to St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center, said Sgt. Phil Toney.

When she arrived, the suspect was pushing the restaurant s manager. The officer asked the man to leave, but he refused, the sergeant said.

Officer Kujawa had the suspect up against the wall, ready to handcuff him, when he turned around, and punched her, Sergeant Toney said.

She was knocked to the ground, where the man continued to assault her. Sergeant Toney said the officer tried unsuccessfully to subdue the man with a Taser.

City Grill employees held the man down until more officers arrived. Police charged Robert Simpson, 37, of 626 Bronson Ave., with felonious assault on a police officer. He was being held without bond in the Lucas County jail.
