A Toledo Correctional Institution inmate who was assaulted Sunday morning has died, according to the Lucas County Coroner's Office.

Michael A. Dodson, 38, who was serving a 40-year sentence for attempted murder and aggravated robbery out of Seneca County, was pronounced dead at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center sometime earlier today.

The assault was reported at 10:25 a.m. inside Dodson's cell, which he shared with a cellmate.

The cellmate, who is not being identified, is believed to be the suspect, said Lt. Anne Ralston of the State Highway Patrol.

No charges have yet been filed, Lieutenant Ralston said.

The lieutenant would not say what led to the assault and what weapon, if any, was used.

“It's too early to say what happened and why,” the lieutenant said. “The investigators continue to investigate.”

Officials do not believe anyone else was involved in the attack.

This death is the fourth homicide at the prison, in North Toledo, since September, 2012.
