Dog adoptathon set for Lucas Co. shelter

Lucas County Canine Care & Control is hosting its second end-of-the-year adoptathon from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at the center, 410 S. Erie St.

Local businesses and individuals have sponsored most of the about 60 dogs available for adoption. Sponsored pets have reduced adoption fees ranging from free to $50. The standard adoption fee is $100, and all new owners must also purchase a $25 dog license.

The adoption fees include spay/​neuter surgery and initial vaccines for distemper/​parvo, rabies and bordetella. Worming, microchip and registration, a physical exam, and a behavioral evaluation are also included.

The event also serves as a fund-raiser for Cutie’s Fund, a program created in November, 2012, to help dogs that come into the county shelter with high-cost medical needs. The program’s namesake was a Chihuahua brought in during the middle of the night with a dead puppy lodged in her birth canal. The emergency-care bill for Cutie was more than $1,400.

More than $55,000 has been raised to date for the fund, and Cutie herself will be at today’s event.
