Mich. nuclear plant fire to be reviewed by NRC

NEWPORT, Mich. — A small fire Thursday afternoon at the Fermi 2 nuclear power plant is being reviewed by the two Nuclear Regulatory Commission resident inspectors assigned to the northern Monroe County facility, the agency said.

The blaze was quickly extinguished with no radiation release or affect on workers, the NRC said. Fermi 2 was offline at the time, down for its biennial refueling.

The fire was near the turbocharger, an air-intake system on one of the plant’s four diesel generators. Diesel generators provide backup electricity in an emergency. The fire was discovered during routine testing.

An alert was called at 2:05 p.m., then terminated at 3:32 p.m., the agency said.
