OAK HARBOR, Ohio — Ottawa County authorities on Sunday released the identity of the victim who was struck and killed by a Norfolk Southern train in Salem Township near Oak Harbor the previous day.

Sheriff’s deputies said the victim was Daniel Vincent Haley, 29, of Oak Harbor.

The sheriff’s office was notified at 6:15 a.m. Saturday that the train had hit a person on the tracks near the railroad bridge over the Portage River.

Initial reports said the man was dead at the scene.

The southbound train included two locomotives and 73 loaded rail cars carrying finished vehicles, railroad officials said.

The train had just crossed the Portage River and was about 50 yards south of the river when Mr. Haley was struck, deputies said.

The stopped train blocked crossings in Oak Harbor for several hours.
